THE WHAT? Shiseido has developed a new water-based sunscreen technology that maintains high UV protection and water resistance while adapting to changes in environmental humidity.
THE DETAILS The oil-in-water technology uses soap-derived ingredients that react with metal ions in sweat and seawater to form a durable, water-repellent film on the skin. This enables long-lasting UV protection without UV scattering agents or heavy film formers, delivering a lighter, more transparent finish with reduced white cast and lower risk of clothing stains.
The formulation also regulates moisture on the skin surface, retaining hydration in dry conditions and releasing excess moisture in humid environments. Shiseido expects this adaptive moisture control to help suppress IL-1α activation linked to age spots. The research was presented at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan in December 2025.
THE WHY? The technology targets a key industry challenge: combining high sunscreen performance with lightweight textures suited to daily wear in heat, sweat and humidity.
