THE WHAT? McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org’s latest Women in the Workplace report shows a continued pullback in corporate commitment to advancing women, alongside the first recorded promotion ambition gap between women and men.
THE DETAILS Only 54% of companies now prioritise women’s career advancement, down sharply from pre-pandemic levels, with even lower focus on women of colour. Many organisations are also scaling back enablers such as flexible work, sponsorship and women-focused career development.
For the first time, women are less likely than men to seek promotion—particularly at entry and senior levels—largely due to weaker sponsorship, fewer early leadership opportunities and limited visibility into pathways to the top. The report also highlights lower promotion rates for women working primarily remotely and reduced encouragement for women to engage with AI tools.
THE WHY? As competition for skilled talent intensifies, reduced investment in equitable advancement risks weakening leadership pipelines and long-term performance across female-led industries.
