Coupang Confirms Massive Breach Affecting 33.7 Million Customers

I

THE WHAT? Coupang has disclosed a major data breach affecting nearly its entire customer base, with 33.7 million users’ personal information compromised.

THE DETAILS The breach, detected on 18 November and reported to regulators two days later, exposed names, phone numbers, email addresses and delivery details, though payment data and login credentials were not affected, according to the company.

Authorities say unauthorized access began on 24 June via overseas servers and may have gone undetected for months. Police have identified a suspect believed to be a former Chinese employee who has since left South Korea. Coupang had initially estimated the breach at 4,500 accounts before revising the number dramatically upward.

THE WHY? The scale and duration of the breach raise significant questions about data governance in South Korea’s digital economy, with the potential for heightened regulatory scrutiny and consumer backlash.
