THE WHAT? A new international study has identified significant rates of vascular occlusion linked to facial fillers, prompting calls for ultrasound mapping to prevent serious complications such as tissue damage and blindness.
THE DETAILS Researchers reviewed 100 filler-related complication cases across six global centres from 2022 to 2025. Ultrasound scans showed nearly half had blocked small connecting vessels and one-third had obstruction in major facial arteries. High-risk zones—particularly around the nose—were emphasised due to their proximity to critical blood vessels.
Lead researcher Dr Rosa Sigrist says ultrasound allows clinicians to map vessels before injection and accurately target treatment if problems arise, reducing the need for high-dose hyaluronidase. BAAPS noted ultrasound use is increasing but remains non-standard, renewing calls for stronger regulation and medically trained injectors only
THE WHY? The findings spotlight ongoing safety gaps in the booming aesthetics sector and the need for consistent clinical protocols.
